    National Central Research Institute was established on Jun 9, 1928 in Shanghai (Director: Cai Yuanpei)

    Institute of Engineering, National Central Research Institute was separated as independent institute in July 1928. (Director: Zhou Ren)

    The construction of "Science and Engineering Laboratory", which was shared by the Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Groups, commenced in Baili South Road, Shanghai (Current No. 865 Changning Road); the construction was completed in 1932.

    The three groups moved from the temporary domicile to the "Science and Engineering Laboratory"

    After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the Institute moved to inland Kunming according to the order

  • Renamed: National Central Research Institute was renamed in September 1945 in Kunming (Director: Zhou Ren)

  • June 1946

    Move back to Shanghai after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, leaving part as the Kunming Workstation

  • Chinese Academy of Sciences was established on Nov 1, 1949 in Beijing (Director: Guo Moruo)

    Engineering Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Engineering was restructured and renamed in March 1950 (Director: Zhou Ren)

    Institute of Silicate Chemistry and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established on the basis of the ceramic part of the Institute (Later renamed as Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences)

    Kunming Workstation of the Institute was named independently as: Institute of Metallurgical Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Later renamed as Kunming Metal Research Institute)
