Shanghai is now constructing a global science and technology innovation centre to realize sustainable, knowledge based development. Some actions on human resources, maker space, research commercialization, financial capital and intellectual property have attracted global attentions. A special report in latest <Nature> introduces the golbal science and technology innovation centre plan of Shanghai, and three key players, Ziqi Shou (Director General of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality), Xi Wang (Director General of Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Jie Zhang (President of Shanghai Jiaotong University) were interviewed to share their views on Shanghai's strengths and future challenges.
